Ahead of the Climate Emergency

Earlier this month, cross-party MPs endorsed a motion to declare a formal climate emergency, calling for urgent remedial action throughout the economy.

The move followed weeks of high-profile direct action by protesters including school climate strikers and Extinction Rebellion, and a parliamentary meeting between MPs and the teenage Swedish activist, Greta Thunberg.

In the words of the environment secretary, Michael Gove, the climate emergency “… is a crisis, it is a threat, that all of us have to unite to meet.”

Since TEL was established 50 years ago, the company has been developing environmentally sustainable products designed to minimise energy consumption in laboratories throughout all sectors, from commercial organisations to higher education institutions.

We have worked on a number of laboratory projects recognised in leading sustainability awards, such as the Green Gown and S-Lab initiatives.

Products such as our auto sash controller, which automatically closes the fume cupboard sash when no operator is present, therefore minimising energy consumption, have certainly been experiencing a rising demand over the last few years.

No longer perceived as a desirable extra, TEL’s auto sash controller is being integrated by a growing number of users with their existing VAV and CAV airflow monitors and controls in order to really optimise laboratory energy efficiency.

As pressure mounts to accelerate the rate at which remedial action is taken, end users will no doubt be faced by ever steeper environmental sustainability targets.

TEL is constantly developing new, energy-saving airflow monitor and control products, and this will continue to be the case as the country rises to the growing challenge presented by accelerating climate change.

In 2018, we expanded our offer to include a range of sustainable digital laboratory ovens, and earlier this year, we launched a range of airflow terminals for the wider market, enabling the sustainable generation of clean air in any building space, not only the laboratory.

Further new sustainable products are already well into development, and we look forward to launching them later this year.

In the meantime, while the country looks set to face a raft of new and more stringent regulations designed to help deal with the environmental emergency, our customers can rest assured that, with our help, they are already on the right lines.
