New gas sensor transforms carbon filter management

In 2017 we launched the AFA4000/E, a pioneering airflow control and monitoring system that provides lab users with continuous velocity readings and cutting-edge alarm diagnostics. Developed alongside auto sash functionality, our aim was to empower lab managers to operate fume cupboards safely and efficiently.

Recently we’d been wondering how we could improve this product to make labs even safer and even more efficient? Our latest gas sensor innovation does just that.

The carbon filter conundrum

Labs that recirculate air use carbon filters to remove gaseous chemical contaminates from it. When they become saturated, filtration is compromised and gas may escape, risking the health and safety of lab workers.

Until now, lab managers have relied on rough estimates and/or general manufacturers’ guidelines to schedule carbon filter replacement. This not only compromises safety but is inefficient because it fails to take into account the specific filtration requirements of each lab.

TEL’s gas sensor

We’re excited to announce we can now give lab managers greater certainty about the effectiveness of their carbon filtration systems.

We’ve enhanced the AFA4000/E (as well as the AFA4000/1 and AFA4000/2 CAV airflow monitors) with a gas sensor that monitors the saturation status of carbon filters in real time, detecting filter breakthroughs and triggering an alarm. It also keeps track of total filter usage in line with the manufacturer’s estimated filter lifespan.

As a result, lab managers now have the data they need to manage carbon filters proactively, safely and efficiently, replacing them according to need and preventing potential safety issues before they arise.

Breathe Easy Benefits

  • Respiratory health of lab workers protected
  • Overall lab safety improved
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety legislation
  • Cost efficient management and replacement of filters
  • Easy to retrofit to existing lab equipment

TEL’s gas sensor functionality helps reduce uncertainty and promotes peace of mind.
